President's Message

Happy New Year Everyone!

With the start of the New Year I want to encourage each and every one of you to consider judging during the print competitions. All of us have noticed that during the last 5 or 6 meetings the judges have been, generally speaking, the same generous folks who always volunteer to participate because no one else does.

The participation of different judges has two great benefits:

The judge is encouraged to use his/her photographic knowledge and emotions to score and make comments about prints entered by fellow photographers that evening. This simple action, believe it or not, helps the judge to become a better photographer, to be more creative and critical of his/her own work.

The club at large benefits because of new points of view and emotions, different photographic, technical and creative backgrounds. In other words, the club benefits because of the diversity of our members.

Please make one of your New Year's resolutions to judge in our Club at least once in 2005; you won't regret it!

Thank you,
José

José Guillén,
President of the Calgary Photographic Society.

Club Meeting, December 1 2004
Guest Speakers

The guest speakers at our December meeting were our own CPS club members Stephen Butt and Harry Mah

Stephen Butt and Harry Mah

Stephen and Harry presented images they made on a joint trip to Nova Scotia.

Their idea of taking a shooting trip together started 4 years ago. The statement that sparked it was: "I don't want to go with other photographers as we'll all get the same pictures." They decided they'd explode the myth, so off they went!

Before they showed us any images, they described their photographic backgrounds, preferences, and gear.

Both have been shooting film for decades. Stephen shoots Ilford black-and-white films, Kodak IR film, or Fuji Velvia - all in 35mm as well as medium format. He feels no compulsion to abandon emulsion right now! Harry, on the other hand, shoots everything - film in all formats, and digital too.

Stephen admitted that he owned not 1, but 2 enlargers. Not to be outdone, Harry claimed he owned 6 enlargers - 5 to use, and one for a spare. (Does Harry have a one-upmanship problem? Or perhaps he really does have one for every day of the week but the Sabbath!)

Harry tends use to selenium and sepia toner on his prints more often than Stephen does. It seems as though Harry likes to experiment more than Stephen - who prefers production rather than prototyping!

Their trip was in a loop around Nova Scotia, lasting 4 days. They had consistent weather the whole time - an overcast drizzle! While many would grumble, Stephen considered this to be the ideal light, as there's little need to dodge and burn in the darkroom in order to avoid blown-out highlights and shadows.

The images they presented were never the same. They used different films, different focal lengths, different compositions, and different cropping. And occasionally, one captured an image while the other was napping in the car! There was a surprising amount of variety in their images.

One other way their pictures sometimes differed was by flopping the image. Harry showed several pictures which were mirror images to Stephen's; they had been laterally flopped. Apparently, this happens when Harry scans his negatives on a flatbed scanner. In an effort to avoid Newton's rings, the emulsion side of the negative is placed against the glass, so the image is reversed upon scanning. Unless there's printing in the frame, Harry often leaves the image flopped - see the photo above for an example.

Occasionally, too, the choice of a horizontal reference was presented differently by the pair. One would carefully level the camera, while the other would twist it somewhat to emphasize the subject. (Of course, this is only done when there is no hint of a horizon in the image.)

Results showed that even when shooting the original in a very confined place with no room for an alternate angle, 2 photographers can display dramatically different results!

Our thanks go to Stephen and Harry for sharing their trip, their viewpoints, and their images with us!

Christmas Brunch and Print Competition Awards
December 5 2004

The Annual CPS Christmas Brunch took place on Sunday, November 7. The event, with an attendance of about 20, was held once again at the Glencoe Club.

In addition to being a social event which allows shutterbugs to mingle and to meet family members, the annual print competition awards were held.

The points accrued by members during the monthly print competitions were tallied beforehand. The winners were announced at the brunch, and plaques were presented as follows:

  • Novice Theme: Michael Sundberg
  • Novice Open: Michael Sundberg
  • Intermediate Theme: Jack Dyck
  • Intermediate Open: Marcelo Pinheiro
  • Advanced Theme: Neil Koven
  • Advanced Open: Norm Capper
  • Digital: Neil Koven

Note that the club no longer supports a category specifically for digital images, so Neil's well-deserved award is particularly unique.

The CPS wishes to thank Winter Photographics, and Scott Winter in particular, for sponsoring plaques for the winners as well as door prizes presented at the brunch.

Also meriting our gratitude is The Camera Store for providing additional door prizes.

Last but not least, the CPS wishes to thank CPS member Brian Henson for organizing the brunch at the Glencoe Club.

Photography in Cortona, Italy

CPS member Brian Henson wanted to alert members that the University of Alberta's Faculty of Arts operates a campus in Cortona, Italy.

Regularly scheduled credit courses are offered there; courses are taught in English by U of A professors.

In particular, Brian mentioned a photography session available May 9-17 2005. The cost of $2800 includes meals and ground transportation - but not airfare. This is nominally available to U of A grads, but others will be considered as well.

For more information, the Cortona Project page is here. No online information is available about this session, so phoning or sending an e-mail to the U of A is required if you are interested.

Meeting Notice

Our next club meeting will be held Wednesday January 5 2005. It will be held at 7:30PM at the University of Calgary, in the Kinesiology "B" building. Our normal room is KNB133; if there are availability problems, the alternate room used is typically KNB129.

For the January meeting, we have not invited a guest speaker. Rather, we will be holding our annual "Print Show and Tell."

Club members who have made prints from a common negative are invited to present their prints and describe what they did to obtain the final results. Identical negatives (645-format black-and-white) were made available at the December 1 meeting for any members who wanted to participate in January. As well, film scans of the negative were made available for those who wanted to make a print digitally.

Note that Winter Photographics is (again!) sponsoring prizes for the best prints presented at the "Print Show and Tell." The judges for best prints will be: all the attendees! Everyone gets a paper ballot, and the winners will be announced the same evening.

The regular print competition will follow the "Print Show and Tell."

Dues for the 2005 year can be paid to our treasurer, Norm Capper, at the meeting. Make sure you bring your chequebook to the January meeting!

And, at our February meeting, we will be holding elections for executive positions. The positions will be described in next month's newsletter, and will be reviewed at the January meeting. If you are interested in supporting the Calgary Photographic Society, give some thought to joining the board!
