Calgary Photographic Society
February 2005 Newsletter
Dear members;
As you know, the Calgary Photographic Society is volunteer driven. Since its early beginnings, volunteers have contributed to the society by donating their time and commitment to organize meetings, outings and trips, invite and coordinate speakers, host events, administer finances, liaise with the University of Calgary or with the Science Centre, archive photographs, register the competition scores, edit and broadcast newsletters, chair the monthly meetings, and so on.
At our February meeting, and as stated in our by-laws, we are conducting the elections for the 2005 Executive. Our exiting executive is comprised of talented and committed individuals, however, we are always open to new talents and ideas. If you are interested in filling one of the executive positions please check the description of the positions listed in this newsletter and contact me to nominate yourself. All you need is to be in good standing (paid membership).
Speaking of volunteers, I want to once more thank Norm Capper and Doug Neal for accepting being judges at last month's print competition. Both Norm and Doug provided excellent feedback to the photographers who entered the competition.
And one last word, February is also the time to renew your membership. Please keep in mind that your membership entitles you to receive our newsletter, post items for sale in our website, attend all our regular meetings and enter in the print competitions. Your membership also gives you immediate access to discounts at Winter Photographics in Cochrane and The Camera Store in Calgary.
Thank you,
José
José Guillén,
President of the Calgary Photographic Society.
Club Meeting, January 5 2005
"Print Show'n'Tell" Event
In lieu of a guest speaker at our January meeting, we did not invite a guest speaker. Rather, we held our annual "Print Show'n'Tell."
We held this event for the second time this year, and it's likely to become an annual event.
Club members who made prints from a common negative were invited to present their prints and describe what they did to obtain the final results.
Identical negatives (645-format black-and-white) were made available at the December 1 meeting for any members who wanted to participate in January. As well, film scans of the negative were made available for those who wanted to make a print digitally but couldn't scan medium format.
The negatives were shot by Harry Mah in 2004. They were shot and processed in a calculated manner to make the entrants work hard to get good results. For example, the image was shot with generous outer margins to allow entrants to choose their own desired cropping. If a person were to print the whole negative, the print would have suffered from a split personality as there were several points of interest which divided the viewers' attention.
And, the negatives were quite thin, nominally resulting in very dark prints. As expected, Harry took much ribbing for the negatives he provided!
Each person at the meeting - members and guests alike - was given a ballot and invited to vote. There were 23 ballots, one for each attendee.
There were 13 prints to judge; 12 prints from members, plus a "control" print provided by Scott - a straight print with no adjustments whatsoever. The straight print received no votes whatsoever!
The ballots allowed each judge to choose 3 prints, for their first, second, and third choices. Tabulation was performed after all ballots were received by assigning 3 points to each first-choice vote, 2 points to each second-choice vote, and 1 point to each third-choice vote. Winners were decided by their point totals.
Prizes for those ranking highest were provided courtesy of Winter Photographics.

Michael Sundberg took first place. He amassed 31 points, including 7 first-choices.
1st Place - Michael Sundberg
Michael described his printing manipulations as follows:
"I cropped some foreground area to lower the horizon and to place the two tree groupings at approximately the 1/3 and 2/3 positions in the print. I feel that this composition creates a pleasing balance. I tried to upset the otherwise serene calmness in the image by introducing a slightly abstract effect, using texture and contrast to suggests some weather instability - a heavy sky and bright highlights in the surrounding field. To produce the print, I scanned the negative and modified the image extensively in Photoshop with dodging, burning, sharpening, contrast control and a lot of clone stamping in the foreground."
For first place, Michael won a double 4x6 frame.
Stephen Butt and Scott Winter were tied for second place with 22 points each. Stephen had 4 first choices, Scott had 3.
2nd Place (tie) - Stephen Butt
Stephen's print was unusual in that he chose a vertical format. This is how Stephen described his technique:
"I tried several times to do the image as a horizontal, but was not happy with the out of focus foreground, and could not get the sky to burn in without looking muddy. Almost as an afterthought I tried the vertical crop, and voila, that solved the foreground problems, and the sky looked good as well! Sometimes if you are trying to print an image and you are stuck, looking at it from a fresh "angle" seems to help. All I really did to the image was burn in the barn and sky a little bit, then give it a sepia tone."
Stephen was presented with a photo album for second place. Scott chose to decline his prize for second place, allowing it to be awarded to the entrant with the next-highest score.
2nd Place (tie) - Scott Winter
Scott declined to describe his printing technique - perhaps he wants to ensure he takes the highest score at the next Print Show'n'Tell!
Since there was a tie for second place, no third place was awarded. Fourth place was awarded to Norm Capper, who had 16 points including one first-choice.
4th Place - Norm Capper
Harvest Moon
Norm chose to show a stylized image rather than attempting to improve upon a bleak reality. Norm described his print manipulations using Photoshop:
Norm won a 5x7 frame for his efforts.
This was the second time the CPS held this event, and it was well received. It is likely to become an annual event.
Support for the Print Show'n'Tell was provided by Harry Mah - who shot and processed the negatives (and took the resulting teasing in stride!) - and by Winter Photographics for providing prizes!

Web Crawl - Ilford 2005 Calendar
Accoding to Ilford's web pages, they remain in financial difficulty. There have been no press releases since their news of 6 months back. Perhaps no news is good news?
Their website remains functional, however, and they have made available a 2005 calendar in .pdf format which is free for the downloading and printing. If features some memorable images of the late Marilyn Monroe, taken by Sam and Larry Shaw. Entitled "Marilyn, the Legend", it features colour, monochrome, and hand-coloured images.
Ilford's homepage is here. The calendar page is linked directly from the homepage.
Our thanks to Neil Koven for spotting this gem!
Web Crawl - Brazilian Photographs
CPS member Marcelo Pinheiro found an interesting web page entitled Fotógrafos Brasileiros, which features photographs from a variety of Brazilian Photographers.
There are literally hundreds of photos on this page, so it takes quite a while to load. The photos are not captioned, but most of our members can't read Portuguese anyway!
Then again, it's easy to understand good images taken in any language! The variety is great, check it out!
Fotógrafos Brasileiros is here.
Meeting Notice
Our next club meeting will be held Wednesday February 2 2005. It will be held at 7:30PM at the University of Calgary, in the Kinesiology "B" building. Our normal room is KNB133; if there are availability problems, the alternate room used is typically KNB129.
For the February meeting, our guest speaker will be our own Bob Lee. Bob will be presenting "Images from Asia." Regular attendees of our meetings know that Bob is well-travelled, has a powerful addiction to mountains, and a good eye for great images. This promises to be an excellent presentation, don't miss it!
For those of you in arrears, dues for the 2005 year can be paid to our treasurer, Norm Capper, at the meeting. Make sure you bring your chequebook to the February meeting!
Election Notice
Also at our February meeting, we will be holding elections for the executive positions. These are volunteer positions - not paid!
If you are interested in supporting the Calgary Photographic Society, give some thought to joining the board!
The positions are described as follows:
President: Chairs the monthly meetings, calls for executive meetings (usually no more than twice per year), arranges for room rental and signs leases, organizes the annual scavenger hunt, and attends to other business that comes up from time to time. The time commitment outside of the monthly meetings averages about 2 hours per month.
Treasurer: Maintains the society's financial accounts and books, files taxes and annual returns, pays bills, collects the membership dues. The Treasurer also maintains the society's membership list. The time commitment averages 2 hours per month. An accounting background is NOT necessary - we will train any interested person!
Monthly Programming Director: Arranges for guest speakers for the monthly meetings. Duties include phoning potential speakers, and booking them for a meeting. Time commitment is approximately 1 hour per month.
External Programming Director: Arranges 2 - 4 field trips or seminars per year. The only skills required for this 1-hour per month position is your imagination!
Secretary: Records the scores for the critique at the monthly meetings, and records the minutes for any executive meeting that the president calls. The secretary forwards the results of the critiques to the newsletter editor. Time commitment varies, but last year there was only 1 executive meeting, so it probably worked out to about 6 hours per YEAR.
Archivist: Photographs both the winning and any interesting images that are submitted for the monthly critique, and maintains the archive album. This position requires a camera and about 1 hour per month.
Newsletter Editor: Writes, edits, publishes, and mails the newsletter each month. This is a great position if you like to voice your opinion!! Currently, the newsletter editor is also acting as the club's webmaster. The time commitment is about 6 hours per month, but could be reduced by an efficient person.
If you are interested in running for any of the positions please contact one of the executive members.
Conclusion
This concludes the February 2005 newsletter.
If anyone has ideas for guest speakers for future meetings, please contact Harry Mah.
If members have material for the newsletter or elsewhere on our website - announcements, news, exhibitions, awards, soapbox articles, wanted/for sale, etc - please forward to Jack Dyck.
See you at the February meeting! Don't forget to bring your prints for the competition theme "Underwear"!

Newsletter Editor for the Calgary Photographic Society .
