Editor's Message

Well, it's that time of year again! Exposure 2007, the Calgary-Banff month of photography runs from February 1 to February 28 this year. Many high-calibre prints are on public display for the month, so make sure you get out and see some great work!

The Exposure event calendar can be viewed online at: http://www.exposurecalgarybanff.com

As well, February is a special time of year for other reasons...

Firstly, Calgary Photographic Society annual fees are due now! Please ensure you bring a cheque along to the February meeting, made out to the Calgary Photographic Society. Dues for the 2007 year are $30 per person or $40 per couple.

As well, the upcoming February meeting will also serve as our Annual General Meeting. This Wednesday, we will be taking a few minutes from our regular meeting schedule to conduct some club business, as required by the Alberta Societies Act. Notably, we will be holding elections for the board, which may require your voting privilege.

I hope to see YOU at the meeting!

Jack Dyck
Newsletter Editor for the Calgary Photographic Society.

Club Meetings - New Feature
Photographers' Show and Tell

In the interest of helping to create an activity where club members can engage in photographic subjects of interest, some of the more experienced photographers in the club are being asked to bring one or two prints to our general meetings for display and discussion during the exhibition print display. Other exhibition prints may also be shown, but, hopefully, we can promise a minimum of one print by one of our experienced members at every meeting.

In order to keep the interest level up for the exhibition prints, their viewing will be moved forward, between the Open Competition and the Theme Competition. This more thorough discussion is not intended for all exhibition prints, just those presented by the appointed photographers in the list below:

Meeting DatePhotographer
Feb 7 2007Bob Lee
Mar 7 2007Tony Field
Apr 4 2007Scott Winter
May 2 2007Marcelo Pinheiro
Jun 6 2007Harry Mah

The list above was drawn up to ensure we had participants to start the process. Volunteers for future sessions are encouraged; please contact any board member if you are interested in showing an exhibition print and discussing some of its details and strengths and weaknesses. These presentations are intended to be brief, like 5 minutes or so, and not intended to require any preparation other than bringing the print along.

The concept is for the photographer to do a sort of 'show and tell' of his/her print(s). When presenting the print, the following are some possible points of explanation or information which could be highlighted:

  • Technical aspects of the exposure and the ambiance at the time (time of day, weather, camera, lens, speed, aperture, camera support, lighting - natural & artificial, filters, special equipment, special automation features used in the camera)
  • How was the original image processed if film? If digital, what format was the original file in and how was it handled when downloaded to a computer file?
  • Was the picture pre-visualized? Was it a grab shot? Was it a picture conceived and executed on the spot? (i.e. Not a grab shot, but also not pre-visualized.)
  • What drew the photographer to take the photograph? What was the attraction about the scene? Why does the photographer feel this a good image?
  • Is the photographer happy with the results? What would the photographer do differently at the scene if given the opportunity again?
  • What uncontrolled conditions existed and how did they impact the image?
  • How was the original image manipulated, either by computer or in the darkroom? Note: Before and after prints would be interesting and provide a good talking piece for demonstration.
  • For digital printing: What software was used? What printer was used? What inks? What paper?
  • For darkroom printing: What chemicals were used? What filters were used? If poly-contrast, what grade of filter? What masks were used and how? What paper was used? What toning was done and how? What touch up was done and how?
  • How was the print mounted? Is there anything special about the mounting or the method of mounting worth sharing?

Club Meeting, Jan 3 2007
Photographers' Show and Tell - Norm Capper

CPS member and Advanced Open category veteran Norm Capper accepted the invitation to present our inaugural Photographers' Show and Tell.

While discussing his prints, Norm was asked if he used a tripod for either image, or if either was posed.

Norm's reply was "While I'm travelling, I feel if I have to stop and think about what I'm doing, I'm doing something wrong."

Pentax/Hoya Merger
From Jack Dyck

[TOKYO December 21, 2006]
Hoya Corporation and Pentax Corporation announced today that they have reached a basic understanding aimed at a management integration of the two companies, expected to be completed on October 1, 2007. The new company’s name will be Hoya Pentax HD Corporation.

This press release is in Adobe Acrobat format:
http://www.pentax.co.jp/english/news/announce/20061221-02.pdf

In this era of rapid camera obsolescence, it's easy to lose sight of some interesting history. In 1964 Pentax (then Asahi Optical) introduced the landmark Spotmatic, the first commercially successful through-the-lens metering SLR. Customers snapped them up in droves; in the years following the introduction, the company was apparently producing more SLRs per month than all its competitors combined! I hope the Hoya merger will be a good move!

Conclusion

The February 2007 newsletter ends here!

In February of 2004, I volunteered to take over the newsletter editor position so as to set Harry Mah free to do other things. That was a good move, as he's currently doing a great job as our President!

When I volunteered, a Very Wise Man (his initials are Jeff Perkins) leaned over and whispered to me "you won't regret it because you get to say anything you want!"

I took him at his word - and haven't been fired for doing so, at least, not yet!

This is my last issue as newsletter editor for the CPS, as I will be stepping down to allow Jeff Clement and Rafael Perini to take over joint stewardship of the role. I'm sure they'll create some great newsletters; I'm looking forward to seeing what changes they have in mind.

I'd like to thank those CPS members who have contributed articles, photos, web links, ideas, and moral support for the last 3 years! Much appreciated!

Jack Dyck,
(Former!) Newsletter Editor for the Calgary Photographic Society.
